It is recommended to stay at the main island since all the attractions on the island can be covered on foot in one day itself. We stayed at the Zaffiro Apartment in Venice and it was a pleasant experience. The place is located at just 10 minutes walk from the Venezia St Lucia station, in the middle of everything and value for money. Although the Piazza San Marco is the preferred option by most visitors and is the centre of attraction but is also much more costly. No place on the Venice island is more than half an hour away on foot, so as long as you can find an accommodation on the main island within budget, you should be okay.
Located in front of St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace, it is the most crowded place in the city of Venice.
No ticket required.
It is just 20 mins walk from the Venezia Saint Lucia Train Station
The Doge's Palace is a palace built in Venetian Gothic style, and one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice in northern Italy. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Republic of Venice. It was built in 1340 and extended and modified in the following centuries. Skip the line entry tickets start from €30 & can be booked online or purchased at the site.
The Rialto Bridge is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. Connecting the sestieri of San Marco and San Polo, it has been rebuilt several times since its first construction as a pontoon bridge in 1173, and is now a significant tourist attraction in the city.
The Basilica of St. Mark is the most important religious temple in the city of Venice. It is located in the St. Mark square (Piazza San Marco), next to the Doge’s Palace, the basilica is one of the most beautiful cathedrals of Europe. The entrance to St. Mark’s Basilica is free, however, you have to pay for the adjacent Saint Mark's Museum, the Golden Altar, and the Treasury for the fantastic view from the free-standing bell tower of St. Mark's Basilica.
Private Gondola ride in Venice costs around €80 during the day and €120 in the evening or at night (from 7 PM to 8 AM). It usually lasts for around half an hour. It is a lovely experience and night gondola ride is recommended with a glass of wine.
You walk up to any port in Venice and take a Vaporetto to Murano and subsequently to Burano and Torcello. One way Vaporetto ticket costs €9,50. Therefore, to cover all 3 islands and get back to Venice it will cost you around €38, so it is better to buy the 24 hour ticket which is available for €25 for unlimited rides.
The island of Murano is famous for its long tradition of glass-making. The Museo del Vetro, tells the story of glass through the centuries. Locally crafted souvenirs can be purchased from here. Ticket for the Museum is €10. One can also visit a glass factory to see the glass making in action. We visited the Wave Murano Glass factory and had a good experience. Plan with a couple of hours for this place.
No two adjacent houses can be painted with same colour and this policy makes Burano an island of colours. All the houses painted in distinctive bright colours render a mesmerising view to your eyes. It is a wonderful place to walk around and enjoy a meal with a glass of local wine while surrounded by the colourful landscape. Plan to spend around more than an hour here.
Torcello is a deserted island with very few local residents. Tourist come to visit the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta or to check out the Ponte del Diavolo, a bridge with no parapets, and the stone seat known as Trono di Attila. A handful of eateries along the main canal serve lunch. Less than an hour is enough time to visit this island.
While staying in Venice you will have to pay a city tax which may range from €3 to €5 per night for less than 5 nights. No tax for 5 nights or more stay. Most likely, the property where you are staying will collect the city tax in cash.
Stay in well-lit and crowded areas, beware of pick pockets and less crowded streets at night.
Carry a stole or light jacket as the weather may become cold in the night.
As all places are within walking distance so wear your walking shoes and get going.
